I got LASIK yesterday! It seems to have worked. I'll go in for my follow-up in a couple of hours and find out exactly how much improvement there was.
I apologize if I was supposed to call you afterwards and didn't, or if I called you twice. I was quite loopy from the anti-anxiety meds they gave me. Apparently I did call my parents right after I got home, and talked for quite a while, but I forgot all about it and called them again a few hours later.
me: "It happened! It worked!"
Mom: "What? What are you talking about?"
me, in an are-you-stupid tone: "The LASIK? My eye surgery?"
Mom: "I know. You already called."
me: "What? No I didn't!"
But Chris confirmed it later. He witnessed the phone call. So I guess it's true, even though I still have absolutely no memory of it.
The procedure itself was easy and painless. The fear and anticipation leading up to it were by far the worst part. The procedure was unpleasant at times, but didn't hurt or gross me out. I was glad they warned me ahead of time that there'd be a burning smell while the laser was operating.
It has been around eighteen hours since the surgery and I have probably spent 14-15 of them sleeping. The rest of the time I've been eating and listening to audiobooks. I've been online a little bit but it's still not easy to focus on the screen so I'll be signing off again shortly.
I have a lot of people to thank:
Matt, for driving me to and from the surgery, holding my hand for everything but the procedure itself, and taking really good care of me.
Chris, for being so supportive of me getting the surgery at all, both emotionally and financially, and for taking care of Elliott for two days straight so I could do it. And for bringing me Thai food in bed last night. Oh my goodness, that was delicious.
Eric, for recommending his surgeon and clinic to me, and for telling me all about his experiences with LASIK several years ago. And to both Eric and Leah for lending me the Narnia books on CD.
Jennifer Mead, for telling me about her experiences with the same surgeon and clinic, and telling me tales of surviving the surgery with almost no medication!
Everyone who came to the party on Wednesday, thus giving me something other than surgery to prepare for and fret about.
Thanks to all!
